The Stop Leaky Building Group was set up January 15, 2007 by homeowners and industry professionals because of concerns for failure of industry and government to stop the problem of leaky buildings.
The Stop Leaky Buildings Group is one of the fastest growing consumer groups in New Zealand.
The motivation for many people to join the group in large numbers may have something to do with the fact that one out of five homes has some sort of construction defect.
It is estimated that more than 80,000 people may be living in leaky homes in New Zealand and numbers are expected to grow.
In the United States and Canada the number of homes with mold problems and leaky building syndrome is estimated to be over 20 million.

Henderson

I am a homeowner, health professional and mother of two adult children. I have become concerned with the increasing problem of leaky buildings.
Leaky homes become a huge liability financially but also may be a serious risk to our general health.
Houses are not supposed to leak from the inside out. Most of us sink our life savings into our homes, yet it can be a huge risk to our finances and health. With the use of modern building materials in the construction of our homes and buildings, our houses need to be leak free and environmentally friendly.
As the chairperson of my local residents and ratepayer's group, I have been a submitter to the present Building Code Review. I want to see improved changes to the manufacturer's specifications.
For this reason, I am supporting the Stop Leaky Buildings Group and lobbying for changese to make our homes and buildings safer and healthier places to live.
